Very informative article today on the factors which may lead to incontinence- some of which, if addressed, can solve individuals incontinence issues. For example, low westrogen in women can lead to weak bladder muscles which can cause urge incontinence. Other sovable problems are urinary tract infections which are in fact a leading cause of incontinence and can be solved. For both genders, drinking less water can actually excaberate urinary incontinence as it leads to more concentrated urine which can irritate the bladder and lead to urge incontinence. See the full article here. If you are a Canadian resident, the clinic mentioned in the article will be having a free sesion on November 20, 2009.

For folks who are new to incontinence aborbent products such as Adult Nappies, it can be confusing to choose which one is best for their needs. Before we explain the best method for choosing, we want to clear up some very understandable confusion you may have related to the terms the industry uses. The terms used are often interchangeable, meaning different names are used to describe virtually the same product. Adult nappies, adult diapers, and adult briefs are essentially the same thing. Protective Pants and/or Protective Underwear are also terms you may see. These products provide almost the same protection with a slimmer more convenient design. Different countries and even different regions of the same country may use different terms but they are all referring to an undergarment that is designed to give you excellent absorbency and protection.

The best method to follow to find the right adult nappy for you is to start with a medium absorbency product, see how it works, then if you find your volume of leakage is less or more than the models maximum, move down or up to the next model for absorbency. This will allow you to find the one that is the least bulky but provides you with the discreet protection you need. Protective Pants are slightly less absorbent than adult nappies/diapers/briefs, but are slimmer and more like regular underwear. These models are a good place to start. Also, start with a less expensive brand such as Depend at first to see if it meets your needs. There are many models on the market that provide excellent protection, but do cost quite a bit more.

To discover the best size, the descrition of the nappy will include a size from usually x small to xx large. Each of the sizes will include a waist size. Do not purchase one that is much bigger than your waist size, as you do not want it to be too loose and cause leakage.

The first step for women who start to experience incontinence issues is to see their Doctor to determine the cause of the problems. In many instances, the solution can be drug or surgery free and simply involves dietary or exercise changes. One of the exciting exercise regimens which has shown promise is the racily titled “sexercise” program for women which help keep pelvic floor muscles toned which can prevent urinary incontinence, as well as uterine and bladder prolapse. The creators of the prgram cite it as a component in “sucessful aging”, as its positive effects include not only improved continence, but resoration of sexual ability.
Incontinence has a significant emotional impact on a caregiver's life due largely to the caregiver not having enough information to improve the situation.

Reuters has an excellent article on the effects of incontinence on caregivers based upon a survey conducted by Tena, a leading manufacturer of incontinence products. If you are caring for a loved one who suffers from incontinence this article will seem familiar to you but will also provide you with some constructive steps to take to ease the burden. Some excerpts from the article appear below, for the full article go here.

Incontinence in a parent, grandparent or spouse has a significant emotional impact on a
caregiver's life, according to a survey released today by Caring.com and SCA,
the makers of TENA® (www.tena.us). The survey reveals that while seventy
percent report incontinence as an ongoing issue with their loved ones,
caregivers are largely uncertain how to help make the situation better, or
even talk about it. In fact, one in three prefer to avoid the conversation
altogether.

The research from Caring.com, a leading online destination for people caring
for aging relatives, and TENA®, the worldwide leader in the management of
bladder protection, found incontinence to be a widespread issue among adults
caring for aging loved ones. More than 25 million adults are affected by
incontinence in the United States today, a number that is projected to
increase as the baby boomer population ages.

"Sixty-five percent of Caring.com members are dealing with incontinence in a
parent, grandparent or spouse. It's a sensitive subject for both the caregiver
and the person they're caring for, ranking among the most difficult
conversations people caring for aging parents are faced with, such as taking
away the car keys and discussing finances," said Andy Cohen, co-founder and
CEO, Caring.com. "Caring.com can help make discussions about adult
incontinence less stressful by knowing what not to say and providing
supportive alternatives on how to talk to your loved one."

Managing a Loved One's Incontinence Takes an Emotional Toll

There is unexpected stress associated with incontinence issues and often the
emotional aspect is just as hard as, or sometimes worse than, the physical
aspects of caring for a loved one. The study found that incontinence can have
a negative effect on a caregiver's emotional wellbeing and influence home care
and nursing home decisions:
-- 42% report dealing with their loved one's incontinence sometimes leads
        to depression;
-- 32% find it emotionally difficult to change their loved one's
        incontinence products;
-- 27% report incontinence has a negative impact on the relationship they
        have with their loved one;
-- 31% are unable to go on vacation because of their loved one's
        incontinence issues; and

-- 18% have considered moving, or have moved their parent to a care
facility or nursing home because of incontinence.

If you are caring for someone with incontinence, it is very easy to become confused and unsure which products to purchae. Much like a lot of products these days, manufacturers have segmented their offerings, which can be good for the consumer, but it can also lead to confusion. Below We have broken down the basic categories of products and who they are best suited for:

Pull-Ons/Pull Up Briefs/Pull On Underwear

Look much like regular underwear, with cloth-like panels. User can pull on or off to remove. Does not have “plasticy” sound when moving.

Good Choice For: Everyday use for people who are able to change their own undergarments. Provides good absorption protection. Can be used for both bladder and bowel incontinence.

Not a Good Choice For: Bed bound persons who need a more absorbent product such as Adult nappies.

Pad inserts/Pant Liners

These products are designed for people with light bladder incontinence. People who have small accidental leakage due to stress incontinence would use these. They fit inside regular underwear or speciality underwear with an adhesive backing to adhere to the underwear.

Good Choice For: People who have intermittent small leakage. Pads can also be used inside Pull-Ons for added absorbency.

Not a Good Choice For: People with large leakage incontinence as these products are not designed to absorb large amounts of liquid. also not designed for bowel incontinence.

Belted briefs/Belted Undergarments

Similar to Pull-Ons, but they offer a more discreet and comfortable fit for the active wearer. Designed to replace regular underwear, this undergarment offers a waistband with no buttons or tapes. The wearer can also remove the product by tearing along strips on the hips for removal without removing pants. These products are slotted between Pull-Ons and Pads for absorbency.

Good Choice For: People who have occasional leakage which is low to moderate. Easier to change in bed. Easy to change when standing without removing clothes.

Not A Good Choice For: Bowel Incontinence

We will discuss steps you can take at home to control urinary incontinence and improve continence. The key to understanding what may be affecting your incontinence is starting and maintaining a voiding diary for at least 3 days. By recording each time you void urine, you may begin to see a pattern emerge as it relates to physical activities or food and beverages you consumed thorughout your day. That morning coffee may be affecting you more than you think!

For three days (they do not have to be consecutive), simply record your fluid intake, each occurence of urine voiding, and any leakage episodes. An example chart is given below. After 3 days, you will have a good understanding of your urination schedule, and this will be valuable information for your doctor.

Time Amt Voided Leak Volume Activity w/Episode Urge? Fluid Intake

8am 1/4 cup dry N/A Yes

9am drips lifting

Amount Voided: Use a spare measuring cup or you can purchase a plastic collection device at a pharmacy or medical supply store.

Leak Volume: If recording a leakage episode, enter Dry, Drops, Soaked, or Bladder Emptied to describe the leakage

Activity During Leakage: If recording a leakage episode, enter activity you were doing prior to episode, such as running, lifting a child, sneezing

Did You Feel an Urge: Enter Yes or No

Prior Fluid Intake: If you are entering a fluid intake entry, enter the amount consumed and the time you consumed it.

If you have been using disposable diapers for any length of time, it is common to become frustrated with with some of their drawbacks such as the occasional (or more) leaks, and the mounting costs. If you are considering trying adult cloth diapers, this post will take you through an overview of what to expect, the pluses and the minuses of using cloth diapers.

Equipment Needed:

If you are a parent who used cloth diapers for your children, you probably have distinct memories of the cleanup process you needed to go through. The same process applies here. You will need to invest in a few items to get you up and running with cloth. You will need:

- Safety pins (unless you purchase diaper models with velcro fasteners).

- Overpants, also called Plastic Pants.

- Diaper pail.

- Clothes Washer and Dryer (optimally), it can be done by hand if necessary.

Selection:

Just like disposable diapers, adult cloth diapers come in various sizes, usually various sizes of x-small all the way to various sizes of x-large. The sizes are based upon waist size, width of the diaper, and the size of the center piece of cloth. The diapers also come in various weights, Standard, Medium, Heavy and Extra Heavy. These weights correspond to the thickness of he cloth, with the heavier cloth providing the most protection. A lighter cloth is best for everyday use, the heavier ones best for nighttime use as they are bulky and hard to conceal under clothes.

First Time Purchase Considerations:

It is best if you purchase a small amount of one type at first to see if it works for you. If you want to try a cloth diaper for everyday use, purchase a small number of Standard weight diapers. Standard weight cloth diapers are bulkier than disposables, but you may find they work fine with loose fitting clothing. For nighttime use, purchase a small number of heavier weight models. It may take some experimentation to see what works best for you.

Pros:

Cloth diapers are very absorbent and bring a sense of security to the wearer knowing leaks are not likely. They work very well for nighttime use as they avoid any issues with wet bedding. They are reusable so your investment does pay off in the long run.

Cons:

Initially, cloth diapers are expensive (up to $45 for the Extra Heavy models) but if you find they work for you, the investment will pay off inthe long run as your disposable diaper budget shrinks considerably. Cloth diapers are bulky which makes concealing them under cothes a challenge. You may find you will need to wear more loose fitting clothes to achieve some level of discretion if that is important to you. You will also need to go through the process of cleaning the diapers.

Summary:

Before making a decision abiut making a wholesale switch to cloth diapers, buy a few “tester” pairs to see how they feel and work for you. Find the size and weight that is best. Go through the process of cleaning and then decide if an adult cloth diaper will be a good fit. You may decide to implement them partially in to your routine, such as wearing disposables to work, and cloth at night and on weekends.
